Keeping active in the winter

pics in this post were found with Google images
Now that we have our little home in the country with the ponies right in the backyard I won't have to spend most of my "free" time in the winter driving back and forth from the boarding barn to take extra care of Cessa.
Don't get me wrong, it does still take a lot of time to take care of her.  Its worth it though :)
Add to that the loads of outdoor space (not quite 80 acres) I am hoping to find something 'outdoorsy' that I can do this winter, at least when its not too darn cold!
Two things came immediately to mind, well three but snowmobiling isn't exactly 'exercise' lol.
1: cross country skiing

 2: snowshoeing
Here's the thing though, I don't really know much about either of them.  I guess I could do some research (hello Google! lol) and ask at the shops for things such as fitting of equipment.
But what I'm more concerned with is can I do it?  For example:  Will either of these hurt my bum knee?  Or aggravate my bad back/hips/shoulder?
While neither of them are as expensive as riding the equipment isn't exactly cheap enough to toss in the storage shed if it doesn't work out...
So, does anyone out there have any input?

PS- does anyone else have this weird little square "photo video deleted" box showing up on this blog?

I was an avid Cross country skier for years, when I got back to it I was terrible .I find it does bother my knee, but I suspect if you start slow, and keep your body mechanics correct it should be OK.It is a gliding motion with little impact so ... snowshoeing , all I remember about it is when you do it the first time, you will find muscles you didn't know you had in your thighs! Probably good too .I am getting the little video box too

I love to snowshoe. My husband runs his snowmachine on the trails so I don't have to break trail. One of the dogs goes with me usually.

I have a pair of good shoes that cost about $100. Tubbs and Redfeather both make good shoes.

As with anything - start slow and work into it.

Yep, I see the little weird image box too...

I would suspect skiing might be hard on a bum knee - can't say for sure though. I suspect it would be different to ski on groomed trails vs. out on the back 40... If you broke a trail with a snowmobile it would be easier...

Either activity is going to give you good sore muscles, that is a given! lol I used to xc ski as a kid and loved it and we keep meaning to get back into it, but we would have to drive somewhere to ski.

Snowshoes might be a fun thing - less gear than skis. Could you rent a pair (or rent skis too...) from somewhere for a weekend to try it out?

yeah, what's up with that rectangle "photo deleted"???
As far as winter activities, how about horseback riding??? We ride all winter long, and it is really great riding. The cross country skiing and snowshoeing are really good workouts though, probably more than riding. But one thing that does burn calories in the winter is outside work! Shoveling snow, cleaning pastures, chopping and stacking wood.....that works for me!

I think the photo delete box is related to the blog theme. I'd assume that blogspot no longer supports the previous theme. So, pick a new one, CDN!

Next, any new sport will leave you sore at first. Ease into it! I tried out snowshoeing my last winter in Alaska and wish I had more time to do more of it. Just 20 minutes tromping around my yard and neighborhood was a good workout!

Give it a try, but take it easy starting out. And don't give up! Like any new form of exercise, it takes a bit to get into the swing of things.

OS you're a genius! I'm sure that's what the deal is with the box. Had to do it on my other blog but forgot to do it here.

Just had another thought about the snowshoeing that might make it a bit easier... You could try using xc ski poles to give you a bit of extra balance at first. Might also help keep you from getting bent over, so it doesn't hurt your back/shoulders...

No, not genius! I'm more Penny than Leonard or Sheldon. Thanks though! I'm flattered!
