My name is Cdn, and I'm an addict.

Its true, its time for me to 'fess up. I am an addict.
Now before you judge and condemn me, and click away to the next blog, let me explain. You see I'm not "that" kind of addict. This is what I'm addicted to:

Oh wait, that can still look rather inappropriate! How about this:

Yes I am standing here and coming out with it... my drug of choice is sugar.

Ahhh, the lovely sweet taste. The little rush. I could do without the crash part though! lol

I'm considering trying to reprogram my taste buds. I love, adore, desire almost anything sweet. And there are so many lovely, tempting things that fall in this category. Unfortunately almost all of them are counter-productive to getting in shape.

My thought is that if I can cleanse my system of sugar maybe my taste buds will start to appreciate things like vegetables a bit more. You see that is my biggest struggle. I am NOT a veggie person. There are very very few veggies that I truly enjoy. (want to hear something really weird - I love the smell of cucumbers but can't stand the taste. And they taste exactly like how they smell!!)

The problem with cutting out sugar is that you need to pretty much eliminate all sugar, including the natural sugars in fruits and juices. At least that's what I've read. You can slowly introduce the natural, healthier sugars after you've been through "rehab".

So I'm not sure I'm willing to go to that extreme yet. For now I'm cutting down on my sugar intake and forcing myself to experiment a bit more with veggies. We'll see how that goes. Besides if I cut out sugar completely I'd have to cut out my coffee. And that just ain't happening at this point! lol

I like to think that I am a healthy eater. I love my proteins and I love my veggies.

But I took a good hard look at the amount of sugar that I inhale in a day...every day...just in my coffee and my Mountain Dew and I was astounded. I immediately cut my coffee mix from a huge glug of sugar-loaded flavored creamer to a small glug and went from 2 heaping tsps of pure sugar to 1 level one. I'm working on cutting the pure sugar input completely out. And I limit myself to one MD a day. It has to help right?

Ya know, sugar was one of my hang ups a long time ago- Mtn Dews, M&M's, shoot pretty much anything chocolate, if it was sweet I was IN like Flynn baby. (And I was a pathetic small size then too... but I NEVER felt *good* or right then.)

Now, my danger zones are not so much the sugars, but meats, cheeses, BEEEEF baby ;) And I FEEL about a thousand times better. I don't eat as much of the meats and such as I did the sugars, either. Add in a salad or two, some taters, and the hungries stay away pretty well and I don't eat as much.

If I knew how the switch happened, I'd share. I'll have to think on it and see what I can remember...

Hi Cdn. I'm a sugar addict too. I went cold turkey once, a few years ago, thinking it was the source of my son's behavior issues. It's not. And I got hooked again.

I'll be cutting it out of my diet again too, eventually. I've reduced it some. I switched to plain old half and half for my coffee, sans sugar or flavored creamers. I'm not eating sugary breakfast cereals any more either. But, I still have a a ways to go yet. The thing is, once I've detoxed from it, I know I'll feel a lot better. But for now, I have a hard time resisting sugar's siren call.

I know sugar is very addictive, and feel grateful that I am not into sweets. I think the detox process may help....

If I drink tea, I must have sugar and milk, but if I drink coffee I won't use sugar, only milk. So I try to choose coffee instead of tea, but coffee gives me the shakes and tummy upset, so I can't drink but two cups close together, and during the winter I tend to want to drink more warm drinks more often.
Maybe I should try to drink hot soups or broth instead?

I stopped drinking soda several years ago. I didn't notice a big difference as I never drank more than one or two a day.

Real sugar only has 16 calories per teaspoon. So is it the sugar or what the sugar is in?

Lisa - My great aunt couldn't drink coffee or tea but she wanted a hot drink in the morning. She drank hot water with a squeeze of lemon. I drink hot Tang when it's too late for coffee and I want something hot.

AKPG - way back when Kimfer's parents first bought their acreage they were reno-ing the house and still living in town. Kimfer, me and a boarder about our age would play with our horses until dark then drink hot Tang around a small fire, wrapped in horse blankets.
Your comment brought back lots of "warm" memories! :)

You aren't alone in the sugar department - it's my biggest vice too. I could care less about salty snacks, but something sweet? Oh boy...

I've actually almost stopped drinking tea now, because I only really like it sweet and milky.

My biggest problem right now is pop - I love coke (cola, not the white powdery stuff, lol) and I sometimes have 1 a day, but I'm down to 3 a week now and hope to keep reducing that amount. Doesn't help that in the States they have vanilla coke (droooool) and I brought home a case!

I don't know if I could handle a total detox, but I'm working on reducing the amount of sugar I consume...

I'm with you on the sugar addiction! Mine is more specifically a chocolate addiction and I seem to have crossed that line into obsession some time ago. I wish I knew how to maintain the willpower to completely detox, but I have yet to find it. Good luck with yours!
