Y'all Will Be Proud Of Me

I resisted. Really, truly, honestly- resisted.

It was in the frozen foods section at the mega mart. I needed more frozen fruits for smoothies.... You know where this is going, right? Yeah. The frozen fruit is directly across from the Ice Cream.

Heavenly, chocolate filled, nutted up, smooth, silky, sweet, cold, bits of frozen Heaven. It called my name... my eyes glazed over... Wrecking Crew was with me, and his wisdom of the moment was, "Mommy! ICE CREEEAAAAAMMMMMMMMM!" (No help there huh?)

When a wee bit of drool began to seep from the corner of my mouth, I decided it was time to move on--- with a quickness!

What stopped me from indulging in my fantasy? Ok- other than the fact that I'd get locked up for stripping down nekkid and ROLLING in the ice cream right there in the store.

It was Dear Husband.

The thought of him, at home, sugar levels going insane, pain levels insane, and knowing how much he loves ice cream.

I could not- just NOT NOT NOT- bring it into the house and eat it in front of him. My husband saved me from myself, with out even being there. Lawsy I love that man.

On the up side - I did indulge in a tiny package of Peanut M&M's. It wasn't ice cream by a long shot, but... it worked. Kinda.

Another upside?
My in waist band holster (for when I wish to carry concealed,) fit into my jeans much more comfortably today. Seems going back to work under horses and making my muffin top scream is wicked good for me!

OK- the REST of you have been much tooooo quiet. What's the "skinny"? What's going on?? Fill us in!!

Well, let's just say I polished off a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips while reading your post. Bad! Bad, NuzMuz! That's the problem with buying nothing but health foods. Eventually, you've just gotta have some sugar, some way, somehow. Next thing I know, I'll be snorting sugar right out of the bag.

But that is great that you resisted, though your reason for resisting is one I wish you didn't have to deal with. My husband is starting to have health problems from being overweight, so I often make better choices at the market for his sake too.

Good for you!

I had a melt down the other day that included tears in a changing room when I went to buy grown up clothes for work. Scrubs hide a lot; grown up cothes do not.

Two-a-days start for me next week; this week's work out will be the Health Fair.

I am proud of you! I have to admit, when I was reading the description of that ice cream it got me craving some myself!! But it is so neat that you did not give in. I think the reason that you were thinking of someone else made it possible, and makes it all the more special that you resisted!!

Go Mrs. Mom!

I just recently read Michael Pollan's little book, Food Rules. It's a quick read with some good info. And then we watched Food, Inc. And I signed Jamie Oliver's petition for public schools to quit serving crap. Dude usually packs his lunch because I can guarantee it's much, much healthier than what the school here serves.

In honor of all those things, our household will be doing the following:

- treats only on days that start with "S" or for special occasions like birthdays
- All treats must be homemade, from scratch, not out of a box. If it's worth having, it's worth the time to make it
- label must contain only ingredients of things that I know what it is and what it looks like in it's natural form (ie, no Xanthan Gum)
- No cereals that change the color of the milk
- No snacks except for vegetables

We are striving to eat more like our grandparents and great-grandparents did. Now, I honestly won't be making all our bread, but we can find bread with simpler ingredients, whole grains and pronounceable items in it. Are my kids going to like this? Nope. Do I care? Nope.

The reality is that this isn't much of a change from how we eat now. It just means there will be less snacking by everyone and less shortcuts with the baking and a little less eating out, which we don't do much of anyways.

My new favorite quote is, "Real food is slow and poor". That's what we're striving for.

Get an ice cream maker. You can make iced milk instead of ice cream. it is not as rich, but a yummy treat on a hot summer day. It follows all of OregonShines suggestions too (btw I love those OS).

Just like Real Horse Have Curves, Real Food IS slow and "poor"! ;)
